Prostrate cancer is a growth in the prostrate, a gland in the male reproductive system about the size of a large walnut.  The prostrate is located below the bladder and in front of the rectum.  Its purpose is to make the fluid for semen, a white substance that carries sperm.  In its beginning stages, cancer needs the male hormone testosterone to survive and grow.  It rarely occurs in men under age 40, and 75% of prostrate cancer occurs in men over the age of 65.  It is second only to lung cancer in cancer deaths of U.S. men.

When prostrate cancer first occurs, there may be no symptoms at all.  The following symptoms are usually caused by enlargement of the prostrate which is not cancer, but may be caused by cancer.

Symptoms may include:

● Difficulty in starting to urinate, and difficulty holding back.

● There may be a need to urinate frequently, especially at night.

● Experience pain or burning during urination.

● There may be weak or interrupted flow of urine.

● There may be difficulty in having an erection.

● There may be blood in the urine or semen.

● May have painful ejaculation.

● There may be pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thigh.

MDs don't know what is responsible for causing cancer.  They offer no method of avoiding cancer, but suggest watching for symptoms as a means of early detection. To avoid the fear of getting cancer, a better approach is to learn the cause of cancer, then prevent it with proper diet.
