Gastric cancer, also known as stomach cancer, forms a tumor or an ulcer in the inner lining of the stomach. Less commonly, the cancer spreads along the stomach wall without forming a discrete lump. This is known as a diffuse tumor.

If discovered early, the cancer will be contained within the stomach lining or stomach wall. However, cancer cells can also invade neighboring organs, and break away and travel to distant parts of the body via the blood stream and lymph channels.

Gastric Cancer Symptoms
Stomach cancer can grow slowly and imperceptibly, and the symptoms are non specific.  This is the reason that most stomach cancers are not detected until a late stage.   It may take a long time, often many months, from the time that symptoms first appear until the patient seeks medical advice. These symptoms are common to a number of other conditions apart from cancer of the stomach, and most people who see their doctor with these will not have cancer. Sometimes stomach cancer symptoms will only develop once the disease has spread beyond the stomach, for example to the liver, and liver cancer symptoms will be experienced.

Stomach cancer symptoms include:

• Internal bleeding appearing as blood in the vomit

• Blood or black tar-like stools, or the bleeding may be so slight as to pass undetected.  The loss of blood will cause the patient to become anemic

• Excessive belching can be an early and embarrassing symptom.  This can progress to a sensation of vague discomfort followed by pain in the mid abdomen if the tumor grows through the stomach wall

• Vomiting due to the obstruction of the food passage by the tumor, which is the first sign that something is wrong

• Indigestion that does not go away

• Difficulty eating, may become full easily when eating or drinking, loss of appetite

• Fatigue or weakness

• Nausea

• Loss of weight

• Heartburn

• Diarrhea

• Bloated feeling after eating

• Constipation

• There may be an abdominal mass, abdominal swelling, pain and fullness in the right upper abdomen.

Medical science does not know the cause of cancer or how to prevent it, and prevention is  really just early detection.  Rather than watch for symptoms which may not occur until damage has been done, it would be more responsible to understand the cause of cancer and the means to prevent it.
