Cancer is the uncontrolled multiplication of cells which form a clump called a tumor. As the tumor gets big enough, if it is near the surface you can feel it as a lump. While cancer always causes a tumor, not all tumors are cancer. A key characteristic of cancer is its ability to spread. If a tumor only grows in its local area, even if very large, if it does not have the capacity to spread then it is not cancerous; this is called a beneign tumor. If it has the capacity to spread, it is called malignant and it is cancer. Malignant means dangerous to health, tending to produce death, in contrast to benign, which causes no harm. When a cancer spreads, that is called metastasis.

A carcinoma is a malignant new growth on the internal or external surfaces of the body. An adenoma is a beneign tumor on the internal or external surfaces of the body. A sarcoma is a tumor of the supportive tissues such as muscle, bone, cartilage, or fat.

A cancer cell can start in one area and spread to another part of the body; that is what makes it so dangerous. Cancer can develop without causing any pain or other symptoms, and some cancers can cause damage before they are detected. This makes prevention very important.

Unfortunately, modern medicine does not know the cause of cancer or the means to prevent it. Actually, after 100 years and billions of dollars in research, cures have been discovered, but once a cure is let out, all research money would dry up, and what researcher would want that?
