Metastatic melanoma is a melanoma, or skin cancer, that has
metastasized or spread to other areas of the body.
Melanoma is a serious form of skin cancer that starts in the melanocytes, or
pigment producing cells of the skin. Once it spreads to other areas of
the body, it is called Advanced or Metastatic Melanoma. Those cells are still
considered melanoma cells.
The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) had developed a
system of staging for defining the
degree of metastasis of melanoma.
